Thermal Insulation

A Passive House Principle

The word insulate is derived from the ancient latin noun ‘insula’ meaning ‘island’ . From there it evolved In the mid 16th century, to become the english verb ‘insulate’ which means to protect by surrounding from outside influences. In other words ‘to create an island’!

For many years now, it has been acknowledged that a building needs to be insulated, which by definition means to protect it from cold, heat or noise by covering or surrounding it in a thick layer.

Whilst this is great in theory, even today in 2020 there are still poorly insulated buildings being built, either by ineffective building techniques, design flaws or simply cost cutting/time saving decisions.

One of the 5 principles of Passive House Design and Build is Thermal insulation where a passive house builder employs techniques for continuous insulation throughout the home’s entire building envelope without any or very minimal thermal bridging.

The end result of a home built with Passive House principles will be a healthy, comfortable, energy efficient, long lasting home.
