A Passive House Principle

Thermal bridge free construction is one for the 5 principles of passive house design and build.

It is important to understand what thermal bridges are in a building, where they occur and how to avoid them.

Thermal bridges are where there is heat transfer into or out of conditioned spaces. They are a result of building geometry, design and construction techniques and building materials.

One of the effects of thermal bridges in buildings (residential and commercial) is increased heat losses (or gains in summer) which lead to increased energy consumption to make up for this, therefore increasing runnings costs and environmental impact.

Another effect of thermal bridges in buildings is a change in the interior surface temperature that can create condensation which leads to mould growth. This situation is a concern to the health of the occupants and can also lead to deterioration of the building materials which in turn decreases the lifespan of the building placing a further burden on environmental resources.

This is why it is fundamental when considering building a new home to design with passive house principles in mind right from the beginning to enable thermal bridge free design and construction to be factored in.

The end result of a home built with Passive House principles will be a healthy, comfortable, energy efficient, long lasting home.
